Uniqueness
by Michael Espinoza
I long to make the stories,
The poems, the songs,
The artwork and the movies
That I want to see myself.
I rarely find the glories,
The treasures, the gems,
The great artistic talents
That I want upon my shelf.
The difference I find tragic,
Though logic doth say
It doesn’t really matter
That they differ one iota:
The arts that show their magic,
To this man, to me,
Don’t always coincide with
The objective greatness quota.
So even with a standard
Ignoring all men’s
Subjective views of artwork
That may differ from all others,
Though I ignore what’s pandered,
And only do seek
Objective greatness, I may
Not discover my soul brothers.
It really is quite tricky
To locate, unplanned,
The things that please me most of
All that I would truly love.
Because I am so picky,
I seek to use skills
To find the place where I do
Fit like hand into a glove.
And yet when I decide that
I should be well read,
I find there’s so much out there
That I never knew existed.
For all that there’s a wide vat
Of stories and arts
With which I am familiar
And whose love I can have listed,
When I compare my own love
To what I hear told,
By folk I meet online or
By the media celebs,
I find myself a lone dove,
A drop in the blue,
Which makes me feel discouraged
As I browse the Interwebs.
Nor does it help much finding
The online exams
That try to match your interests
Based on info that you give.
Though you are always minding
An honest essay,
Inevitably these things
Lose your substance like a sieve.
I know that there are others
Who like things I like
And if the only way to
Find them is with my own works,
I hope to find my brothers
With courage, and love,
By giving of myself to
This small group that somewhere lurks.
So if you find that you are
A member, like me,
Of this same special group who
Found me on this very site,
I hope you find that true are
The words that do say
“You’re not alone in all the
World, and things can be all right!”
World, and things can be all right!”
